How this comparison works

Equivalent amount = entered amount × ending CPI index ÷ starting CPI index.

Uses the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U: all items, US city average, seasonally adjusted, with the index base 1982–1984 = 100. Each selected month matches its stored calendar month-end observation; that date represents the whole reference month, rather than a price or publication date on that day.

Seasonally adjusted history can be revised. Results use the latest stored values, rather than the data vintage available at the time. They may differ from annual-average or non-seasonally-adjusted inflation calculators. Money is calculated with decimal arithmetic and displayed to two decimal places.

Missing months are unavailable, including months not yet published. Intermediate gaps do not prevent a comparison when both endpoints exist. This tool covers US consumer prices only.
